Fashion model Anam Tanoli was found dead in her house on Sunday, leading a lot of people to believe that she committed suicide. The model was 26 years old, and had made quite a name for herself in the Fashion Industry.

When the news of her death broke out, immediately celebrities all over the internet began to speak up about mental health. Some people wistfully reminisced over past conversations they had with her, and wished that they had reached out more. Either way, everybody agreed about the importance of speaking up, reaching out to people and taking care of mental health.

Tanoli had apparently suffered from depression for quite a while and would often say that she was being bullied by people online and in real life. Very active on Instagram, she would often be cyber bullied, usually because of her attire which didn’t sit well with a lot of conservative extremist trolls.

RIP – Anam Tanoli I didn’t know her personally but I’m devastated that a young beautiful girl succumbed to the bullies around her. I spoke to a close friend of hers who told me how deeply she was affected by social media trolling & bullying at work. She was suffering from depression & the world was ruthless regardless. I wish she was stronger but I also wish that we were kinder , all of us. Be on a watch, anyone around us could be suffering from depression & your words can take someone’s life. I’m sorry #AnamTanoli on behalf of everyone who pushed you take such a step. My condolences & love to the family! P.s we may be out here for you on social platforms but we are just like you. we get hurt, we break but we endure & put the broken pieces together to run another show for all of you. Be kind, it won’t cost you a thing, Please be Kind & considerate & compassionate for others & their hearts! #RIPAnamTanoli It is about time we treat depression as an illness so we can comfort the ones suffering, atleast. Seek medical help without reluctance. Please don’t be afraid of the society, protect yourself first!

Mental health is considered a taboo in Pakistan and people shy away from talking about it.  However, people are speaking up about this issue following Tanoli’s sad demise, which might change the narrative around mental health.

The newly elected President, PTI’s Arif Alvi has called for a 24/7 helpline to be established to address mental health, which is a wonderful initiative. Hopefully we will be able to make the discussion around mental health more open and forthcoming.
